The confounding aspect of Trump’s calamity is that it was all so avoidable. In less than two years he has blown one of the greatest historic opportunities any American president has earned.
When he was elected … he had a few simple tasks: get prices under control with sensible economic policies; reduce illegal immigration; keep the US out of costly, unnecessary wars; get allies to do more to help defend the West’s security and take a firm line against its enemies. That was more or less it.
But even in the one area where he has had success among those — immigration — he has managed to alienate Americans who, understandably, do not like seeing masked gunmen out of uniform rounding up brown-skinned people on the streets of their cities. All the others have been signal failures.
