The modern left is on the side of the Iranian mullahs. By Brendan O’Neill in The Australian.
If someone in London were to express the irreligious beliefs that young women in Iran are bravely voicing, they’d be arrested. If you were to set light to a hijab in Trafalgar Square, you’d be surrounded by cops sooner than you could cry: “Freedom of speech!” You’d be accused of inciting religious hatred. Irate thinkpieces in the leftish press would lament your hijabophobia.
There you have it: where young women in Iran yearn for freedom from the hijab, schoolgirls over here are taught how to put one on.
Where millions of Iranians demand an end to Islamist rule, over here you’ll be called Islamophobic if you even criticise Islamism. …
Nothing better captures the crisis of the West than this — the fact we are punishing criticism of Islam at the same time as young Iranians are throwing off the shackles of Islamist rule.
Burning headscarves in Tehran tonight.
Iranians are also setting fire to possessions of the regime forces, including cars, mosques, and their homes.
They are sending Khamenei a message.
But they are also trying to send the world a message.
Please help spread it. pic.twitter.com/pTIrAMzVFu

We’ve been conditioned by the left not to criticize Islam:
This gaping divide between a brave Iran and a craven West goes some way to explaining why so few Westerners are talking about the Iranian revolt.
Having been sternly educated to respect Islam, to steer clear of any stinging criticism of Islamic extremism, they just don’t know what to make of the anti-theocratic rebellion. Having been brainwashed to think criticism of Islam is a species of racism, they must look at the events in Iran and think to themselves: is this bigotry?
Leftist hypocrisy and confusion to the max:
The progressive silence on Iran is chilling. Some on the left are too busy saying “Free Maduro” to say “Free Iran”. The fate of a 63-year-old dictator concerns them far more than the future of millions of Iranians. …
The kind of Western women who think being called “darling” is patriarchal oppression have nothing to say about the savage repression of women by mobs of religious men.
This shameful silence speaks to the moral bewilderment of the modern West….
It would be a brave celeb who tweeted: “Down with the Islamist theocracy! No more mandatory hijab!” They’d be branded problematic. Swarms of the woke would clog their social-media feeds with finger-wagging reminders that the hijab is good, actually. …
The left believes that loving the West (or whites) is racism:
Loving the West is now seen as a kind of racism. Sticking up for Western civilisation is treated as a “phobia”. We end up in a situation where people are so lost in a maze of moral uncertainty and cowardice they can’t even get excited about a revolt against theocratic rule. They stare in bafflement as people fight religious tyranny, unsure what to say, what to think.
There’s another factor in their silence: Israel. Among the more radical left, it’s their unhinged hatred for Israel that makes them bite their tongues on the Iranian revolt. …
The modern left are aligned with the mullahs:
The Iranian protesters are chanting “Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life for Iran!”, because they want the regime to stop funding proxy wars against Israel and instead spend the money at home.
They want the regime to stop persecuting the Jewish nation — the Western left wants it to carry on. This is the jarring reality: Western leftists are more aligned with the Iranian regime than they are with Iran’s freedom-yearning youths.
- They agree with the theocrats it’s blasphemous to mock Islam.
- They agree the hijab is a wonderful garment no one should criticise.
- They agree Israel must be destroyed.
- And they agree America, the entire West in fact, is wicked.
[The] Western intellectuals [are] so drunk on anti-Westernism they can’t even tell right from wrong any more.
Modern left? Even 50 years ago:
Fascinating (and new to me) 1979 NYT article on Ayatollah Khomeini, who is apparently:
(1) an honest man, (2) surrounded by moderates concerned w/ human rights, (3) one who will leave his internal enemies (Jews, atheists, leftists) free to express themselves, & (4) overall a… pic.twitter.com/FKoH6Dd6HX— Stephen R. C. Hicks (@SRCHicks) January 8, 2026
Meanwhile, Britain is such an Islamist hotshot that even the UAE now avoids sending its students there:
The UAE announces it will cuts funds for citizens who want to study in the UK out of fear of Emirati students being radicalized by Muslim Brotherhood Islamists on British campuses.
An Arab state now views a European state as a dangerous Islamist radicalization hotspot.

For every single moment since the Presidential election of 1860, two things have always been true:
1. Republicans support the United States of America.
-and-
2. Democrats support the United States of America, but only if they are in charge.
