Women hold all top leadership positions in Iceland. By Alda Sigmundsdóttir, in Letter from Iceland, in April 2026.
Last week a woman was elected president of the University of Iceland, which means that women now occupy every major public (and private) office in this country.

Icelandic PM, Kristrún Frostadóttir
We are talking about:
The president
The prime minister
The heads of all three parties that make up the Icelandic government
The mayor of Reykjavík
The heads of the five parties that make up the Reykjavík city council
The bishop
The presidents of all universities in Iceland (seven in total)
The Commissioner of Police
The Director of Public Prosecutions (Attorney General)
Equality at last 🙂 No discrimination going on here.
