Congress’ efforts to certify the results of November’s presidential election devolved into utter chaos Wednesday, with supporters of President Trump overrunning police and storming the US Capitol building, explosive devices found and at least one woman shot.

All hell broke loose around 1:30 p.m., as protesters who had already breached the Capitol grounds pushed past police and into the building where hundreds of lawmakers — including Vice President Mike Pence — were assembled. …

At least one woman was shot fatally in the chest inside the building, according to reports and gruesome social media images of the shooting.

Law-enforcement sources told The Post it appeared she was shot by Capitol Police. The woman, draped in red, white and blue, was removed from the building on a stretcher, blood streaming from her mouth and later declared dead at the hospital, authorities said.

Several other protesters made it onto the floor of the Senate, with at least two caught in photos atop in the dais, occupying the seat usually held by Pence, the president of the Senate.

“Trump won that election!” one of those protesters could be heard saying, according to a reporter’s tweet.

Another man was photographed inside the personal office of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, one foot up on her desk. …

Some carried American flags, others the Confederate Stars and Bars.

After breaching the building, several protesters made it onto the building’s balcony, where at least one Gadsden flag, bearing the legend “Don’t Tread on Me,” was draped.

At one point, the crowd outside could be heard singing The Star-Spangled Banner.

Inside, the certification process was interrupted, with lawmakers told to take shelter.

Pence and other lawmakers were evacuated to safety.

Glenn Reynolds:

With 40% of the country thinking the election was stolen, this was to be expected — especially after the unified voice of the media saying for years that if you feel disenfranchised it’s okay to riot.

Our ruling class, and particularly our media, have been playing with fire for years and I hope that this will be enough to shock them into more sensible behavior. But so far they’ve not lived up to my hopes.

Lots of great photos here. The MAGA invaders of Congress were led by QAnon types. The optics are terrible for Trump. Perhaps there were Antifa types masquerading as Trump supporters and directing the mob? That’s the sort of thing they would do.

Odd that security should have been so poor. Could the deep state have allowed them to stroll into Congress, to create such great photo opportunities?

That fool desecrating the speaker’s chair is Jake Angeli, a leading QAnon proponent. That’s not how it is done in a democracy.

Democracy today in the USA. Sad.

What Trump needed was a huge, disciplined show of public support, with large numbers of peaceful, respectful protestors. What he got was a BLM or Antifa style mob that was not impressively large — though it was less violent than BLM/Antifa and it didn’t break stuff or burn things.

Trump invited this terrible behavior with his speech:

All of us here today do not want to see our election victory stolen by emboldened radical Democrats. We will never give up. We will never concede. It will never happen. You don’t concede when there’s death involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore … We will never take back our country with weakness.

The symbolism is terrible for the MAGA types. It gives the deep state all the more excuse to crack down on any dissent, and speech it does not approve of. What a gift to the left today has been. The left wing  and media will play up these optics to define Trump supporters in the public mind. The left no longer have a monopoly on political violence in 2020.

Trump needs to be pro-democracy, and seen to be pro-democracy. His complaint is that his opponents subverted democracy by rigging the election and not allowing observers or examination of ballots or counting machines. So he needs to portray his opponents as the anti-democracy ones. But when his mob, on his implied urging, ends up lounging in the speaker’s chair and disrespecting the symbols of democracy, it looks like he is against democracy.

Trump’s standing and popularity will take a major hit from today’s events. Forget Trump for 2024.

The Democrats have outplayed Trump completely over the election. Trump probably won the election to judge by the accounts of the cheating. But the Democrats/deep-state/media gamed this out in advance and guided events along the path they predicted.

Patrick Byrne:

Do not go violent. We must maintain the moral high ground. … I condem all violence in DC tonight. That’s not us and it is how we lose.

President Trump has been HORRIBLY served by his advisors and remains so.

Last night we watched election data flow real-time from Georgia to Islamabad and China. They take a blank ballot, check live voter rolls overseas, pick one to attribute the vote to, and accept it.
