Germany to close all 84 of its coal-fired power plants, will rely primarily on renewable energy, by Erik Kirschbaum.

Germany, one of the world’s biggest consumers of coal, will shut down all 84 of its coal-fired power plants over the next 19 years to meet its international commitments in the fight against climate change, a government commission said Saturday.

The announcement marked a significant shift for Europe’s largest country — a nation that had long been a leader on cutting CO2 emissions before turning into a laggard in recent years and badly missing its reduction targets. Coal plants account for 40% of Germany’s electricity, itself a reduction from recent years when coal dominated power production. …

Twelve of the country’s 19 nuclear plants have been shuttered so far. …

The plan to eliminate coal-burning plants as well as nuclear means that Germany will be counting on renewable energy to provide 65% to 80% of the country’s power by 2040. Last year, renewables overtook coal as the leading source and now account for 41% of the country’s electricity.

Shamed by Joanne Nova’s visit to Germany in November where she pointed out in a speech in Munich that Australia had overtaken Germany as the world leader in the race to economic suicide by green power, Germany strikes back. Very impressive move, to close all coal power stations.

2038: Imagine all those poor Germans, and new immigrants, huddling for warmth with no electricity in the depths of a German winter on a windless cloudy day. Shivering, they are thankful that no one is burning coal and thus contributing to the global warming that was promised but mysteriously has not arrived like the climate models promised. The warm inner glow will keep them alive.

Alas poor Germany. Killed by virtue and stupidity, letting in lots of new Germans with an old seventh century ideology to show how they don’t discriminate about race, and cutting off power without first doing due diligence to show how much they want to save the world. Poor dumb Germany.

The Germans won’t do all that surely. Something will happen to stop this insanity first.
