Why the Crash in Facebook and Twitter Matters to Investors

Why the Crash in Facebook and Twitter Matters to Investors, by Clint Siegner.

Social media giants Facebook and Twitter crashed by roughly 20% after admitting subscriber growth was way behind projections and revenues were lower than expected. There are a couple of reasons that metals investors may want to take note.

The first is that technology companies in general may finally be reaching the point where they have trouble meeting investors’ sky-high expectations. … Valuations and expectations are off the charts, and it wouldn’t be too hard for the markets to disappoint investors more generally.

Regardless of whether the selloff in the social media giants is signaling trouble ahead for stocks in general, it does fit the pattern of declining confidence in our institutions. People have learned that Facebook and Twitter share an agenda with the radical political left. Content and personalities which aren’t aligned with that agenda cannot expect fair treatment.

And all users must worry about their privacy. Massive data breaches are a regular occurrence, and these companies have demonstrated an eagerness to share user information. Anyone with an account is right to worry that personal info, photos, posts, and search history will be eventually handed off to other companies and even the government.

To make matters worse, these firms are now getting pressure from the European Union to police the content on their platforms. Any government demands that websites move even further away from free speech will further erode users’ confidence.

All the growth in stock markets this year has been due to the dozen big tech stocks (including three Chinese ones) — without them, the markets would be slightly down for the year.

That the tech giants are politically biased has spread from the political pond to investor world. Now “everyone knows.”

The Chinese See Trump as a Master Strategist and Tactician, by the Financial Times

The Chinese See Trump as a Master Strategist and Tactician, by the Financial Times, via Instapundit.

Donald Trump is leading a double life. In the west, most foreign policy experts see him as reckless, unpredictable and self-defeating. But though many in Asia dislike him as much as the Europeans do, they see him as a more substantial figure. I have just spent a week in Beijing talking to officials and intellectuals, many of whom are awed by his skill as a strategist and tactician. …

Few Chinese think that Mr Trump’s primary concern is to rebalance the bilateral trade deficit. If it were, they say, he would have aligned with the EU, Japan and Canada against China rather than scooping up America’s allies in his tariff dragnet. They think the US president’s goal is nothing less than remaking the global order.

They think Mr Trump feels he is presiding over the relative decline of his great nation. It is not that the current order does not benefit the US. The problem is that it benefits others more in relative terms. …

Once the order is destroyed, the Chinese elite believes, Mr Trump will move to stage two: renegotiating America’s relationship with other powers. Because the US is still the most powerful country in the world, it will be able to negotiate with other countries from a position of strength if it deals with them one at a time rather than through multilateral institutions that empower the weak at the expense of the strong.

My interlocutors say that Mr Trump is the US first president for more than 40 years to bash China on three fronts simultaneously: trade, military and ideology. They describe him as a master tactician, focusing on one issue at a time, and extracting as many concessions as he can.

They speak of the skilful way Mr Trump has treated President Xi Jinping. “Look at how he handled North Korea,” one says. “He got Xi Jinping to agree to UN sanctions [half a dozen] times, creating an economic stranglehold on the country. China almost turned North Korea into a sworn enemy of the country.” But they also see him as a strategist, willing to declare a truce in each area when there are no more concessions to be had, and then start again with a new front.

For the Chinese, even Mr Trump’s sycophantic press conference with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, in Helsinki had a strategic purpose. They see it as Henry Kissinger in reverse. In 1972, the US nudged China off the Soviet axis in order to put pressure on its real rival, the Soviet Union. Today Mr Trump is reaching out to Russia in order to isolate China.

Trump is a businessman, with no prior experience in politics. Maybe the political class are really only good at being re-elected, and we should bring in more non-career politicians as our leaders?

Melbourne: Youths pistol-whip woman, steal her car

Melbourne: Youths pistol-whip woman, steal her car. By Richard Ferguson.

Police say a four-wheel-drive hit the car that Kay, 57, was driving in Narre Warren South on Thursday night, before two men got out and one hit her in the mouth with the butt of a gun.

Victim Kay, a disability worker, told Ten Eyewitness News she thought she was going to die. …

The assault on Kay comes as the state’s African youth crisis reaches boiling point, with the state government proposing new anti-gang laws following a series of wild parties, bashings, robberies and the murder of 19-year-old Laa Chol in the past two months.

Detective Sergeant Dean Higgins said on Friday the woman got out of her car thinking she was just going to check damage and exchange details.

She was then confronted with “two young men of African appearance”, one with a firearm, and struck in the mouth when she didn’t comply with handing over her keys.

“The male has then drawn up the firearm demanding the keys,” Sergeant Higgins said. …

Police were investigating whether more people were involved in the carjacking, he said.

Sergeant Higgins said it was an “opportunistic crime” in which the offenders possibly lay waiting for a vehicle to go through the roundabout to hit down the street.

‘Antifa Soccer Cup for Tolerance’ Abandoned After ‘Huge Brawl’ Between Refugee Teams

‘Antifa Soccer Cup for Tolerance’ Abandoned After ‘Huge Brawl’ Between Refugee Teams, by Virginia Hale.

Germany’s annual ‘anti-racist’ soccer tournament had to be abandoned this year after violence broke out during the final, with players from the two refugee teams starting a massive brawl on the pitch.

Fighting between the two teams of immigrants, one of which local media reports was overwhelmingly Arab and the other predominantly African, resulted in the United Colours Antifa Street Soccer Cup in Zwickau having to be called off. …

As violence began to escalate on the market square where the game was staged, observers “rushed as fast as they could” to get away from the brawling players, a “horrified” eyewitness told left-wing Swiss tabloid Blick, which before the match featured an article promising that “fair play, fun, creativity, tolerance and solidarity” were sure to be on show at the event.

Awesome. Sounds like a comedy skit mocking the “refugee” problem and Antifa, but it’s real! The only thing that could make it more poignant would be if Frau Merkel was in attendance.

Refugees in Germany demand everything, contribute nothing

Refugees in Germany demand everything, contribute nothing, by Stan M.

One of the more well-known refugees with questionable demands is Aras Bacho a writer for the Huffington post in Germany. He has previously demanded all Germans should donate money to refugees, provide smartphones and that angry Germans should leave the country all for the good of the country and integration of course.

Other questionable articles and comments by him included claims of racism, the normality of going on holiday to the countries they supposedly fled and even blaming unaccompanied women in a tweet for being sexually assaulted during New Year’s Eve in Cologne 2015. …

Another example is Ahmad A. a Syrian currently living with two wives in the area of Hamburg. He has six kids, a seventh on the way, is illiterate, wants to marry another wife and has no plans to work.

When asked how much money he gets he smiled and replied that he only knows it is transferred to his account and he withdraws it. He smiles and thanks “Mother Merkel” as he endearingly calls her in the piece done by Spiegel TV, which lead to a lot of public backlash. …

Por-Islamic -refugee demonstration brussels

Another protest by refugees lead to turmoil in Fürstenfeldbruck. The protest demanded better food and more spending money. In Bochum asylum seekers even occupied a gym demanding apartments. They claimed promises of free money, houses and apartments were made to them and it’s time for Germany to pay up.

Another curious case took place in Ostercappeln, where a refugee had his cab paid by the state to get to work and later received an E-Bike worth 1199 euros to replace the cab rides. At another asylum center in Rottweil refugees even have a cleaning lady because they refuse to clean up after themselves.

Other problems asylum seekers seem to be having is the free but “unfashionable” clothing offered to them by rescuers and refugee shelters. Aquarius refugees threw away towels and clothes donated by the Red Cross. …

A common theme at Huffpost seems to be calling for an end of the bad “German people” and replace them with the “new Germans”.

I sense a failure to communicate. Oh, the West doesn’t do that any more.

German woman receives large fine for criticising refugees on Facebook

German woman receives large fine for criticising refugees on Facebook, by Voice of Europe.

A German cleaning lady received a fine of 1,650 euros for criticising refugees and the country’s asylum policy, news outlet Wochenblick reports.

The woman commit her ‘Orwellian thought crime’ on Facebook, as she said this about refugees:

“Sh*t on the state, steal from people, rape, swirling the eggs, demand money from us and sue the state. That’s what they can. They’re more valuable than gold, our super-skilled people.”

The cleaning lady’s plea for help to the German judiciary was not heard. On the contrary, the district court of Dachau fined the cleaning woman because of “sedition” (§ 130 StGB).

She was given a 1,650 euro fine, as the court’s opinion was that her comment against refugees “scared people”.

So there. They say you know who rules you by who you are not allowed to criticize, but they should have added that you aren’t allowed to criticize their mascots or pet projects either.

Italy Slashes Asylum Seeker Benefit Payments

Italy Slashes Asylum Seeker Benefit Payments, by Chris Tomlinson.

Populist Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini has ordered that benefits for asylum seekers be substantially reduced, saying the money saved will be given to police working overtime shifts instead. …

Currently, migrants receive between 35 to 45 euros per day from Italian taxpayers but Salvini’s new policy will see that amount reduced to around 20 euros per day.

First Austria, then Italy. Who’s next?

Trump Has Been Set Up, Framed and Relentlessly Persecuted by the American Intelligence Community

Trump Has Been Set Up, Framed and Relentlessly Persecuted by the American Intelligence Community, by Sidney Powell.

The frenzied furor and fomented outrage over President Donald Trump’s reluctance to express blind trust for our “intelligence community” defy reason and reality. …

Power is the only thing leftists worship, and they are unraveling in front of our eyes without it. They can’t control Mr. Trump. That alone drives them insane. They have no policies that work. Cities and states they control are criminal sanctuaries and bankrupt cesspools. Check out San Francisco, Portland and Chicago.

Each of the president’s remarkable accomplishments — from unprecedented high employment, our booming economy and the tax cuts to his historic summit with Kim Jong-un — highlights their abject failures and serves to prick their narcissistic egos. The country is doing better without them every day.

Even worse, they are desperate to keep their countless crimes and abuses covered up.

Putin: Christianity is the Foundation of Russian Nationhood and Cultural Identity

Putin: Christianity is the Foundation of Russian Nationhood and Cultural Identity, by Breitbart London.

Vladimir Putin says the adoption of Christianity more than 1,000 years ago in territory that later became Russia marked the starting point for forming the Russian nation itself.

President Putin’s comments came Saturday in a ceremony marking the 1,030th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity by Prince Vladimir, the leader of Kievan Rus, a loose federation of Slavic tribes that preceded the Russian state.

Speaking to thousands of clergy and believers at a huge statue of the prince outside the Kremlin, Putin said adopting Christianity was “the starting point for the formation and development of Russian statehood, the true spiritual birth of our ancestors, the determination of their identity. Identity, the flowering of national culture and education.”

No wonder the left hates Russia.

How we can help Aussie farmers now and in the future

How we can help Aussie farmers now and in the future, by James Doogue.

Tonight Channel 7 news in Perth ran an item on the farmers in the Eastern States dealing with 18 months of drought — the stock losses, the shortage of feed, the financial distress etc. Aussie Helpers was credited with rescuing one farmer from suicide.

They interviewed an Aussie Helpers person, but I just got the impression that the organization provide comfort, advice and hampers. But they are much more than that as the farmers’ testimonials at the Aussie Helpers website attests.

The kind of assistance Aussie Helpers are thanked for include stock feed, a generator to run a bore for water, groceries, and staples like toilet paper, footwear, or pamper packs — and also moral support, letting farmers know there are people out there who care.

At the end of the news segment there were two phone numbers flashed up on the screen, as the news reader said “Let’s hope help comes for them soon” or something equally inane.

I railed at my wife, complaining that there was nothing in the news item telling viewers how we might help farmers. Yet whenever we have bushfires, and despite the fact that people should have home insurance, there are charities waiting to take our money, and our Governments allocate cash grants and the like.

If someone has a medical condition and the news covers it, there will often be a GoFundMe site promoted. I just thought our News channel should have done something more for farmers in distress.

UK Home Office Rejects Syrian Christians, Refugee Intake 100 Percent Muslim

UK Home Office Rejects Syrian Christians, Refugee Intake 100 Percent Muslim, by Virginia Hale.

Despite the persecution of Christians at the hands of Islamic extremists in Syria having been declared genocide by the U.S., the European Union (EU) and even British MPs themselves in a 2016 parliamentary vote, the 1,112 Syrians that Britain resettled in the first three months of 2018 consisted only of Muslims.

They know what they want.

New York Times publisher and Trump clash over president’s threats against journalism

New York Times publisher and Trump clash over president’s threats against journalism, by Mark Landler.

President Donald Trump and the publisher of The New York Times, A.G. Sulzberger, engaged in a fierce public clash Sunday over Trump’s threats against journalism, after Sulzberger said the president misrepresented a private meeting and Trump accused The Times and other papers of putting lives at risk with irresponsible reporting.

Trump said on Twitter that he and Sulzberger had discussed “the vast amounts of Fake News being put out by the media & how that Fake News has morphed into phrase, ‘Enemy of the People.’ Sad!”

The NYT is the paragon of PC on a worldwide scale:

In a five-paragraph statement issued two hours after the tweet, Sulzberger said he had accepted Trump’s invitation for the July 20 meeting mainly to raise his concerns about the president’s “deeply troubling anti-press rhetoric.”

Ever noticed how only PC people are “deeply troubled”? The rest of us, being deplorables, don’t have feelings — which is why it is perfectly ok to call us nasty names.

“I told the president directly that I thought that his language was not just divisive but increasingly dangerous,” said Sulzberger, who became publisher of The Times on Jan. 1.

“Divisive” is also a codeword, meaning “doesn’t agree with political correctness. “Increasingly dangerous” to whom? Why, to the great globalist PC project of course — goes without saying.

“I told him that although the phrase ‘fake news’ is untrue and harmful, I am far more concerned about his labeling journalists ‘the enemy of the people,’” Sulzberger continued. “I warned that this inflammatory language is contributing to a rise in threats against journalists and will lead to violence.”

Ah, the threats: “lead to violence”. Perhaps that means more Antifia, riots, cop-shooting, and all the rest of the leftist political violence? Or are they feeling a little insecure themselves, as “journalists”?

(UPDATE from John Hinderaker: “Apparently the AP did not seek comment from Steve Scalise, Sarah Sanders or Kirstjen Nielsen.”)

Trump isn’t having any of it:

“I will not allow our great country to be sold out by anti-Trump haters in the dying newspaper industry,” he wrote. “The failing New York Times and the Amazon Washington Post do nothing but write bad stories even on very positive achievements — and they will never change!”

Sulzberger said he bore no illusions that his comments would prompt Trump to curb his attacks on the news media. He said he encouraged the president to complain about news coverage in The Times that he viewed as unfair. But he appealed to him not to systematically attack journalists and journalism around the world.

Why not? Journalists and journalism around the world systematically attack Trump and non-PC people. Why should the punches only go one way? That’s how it was until Trump came along…

John Hinderaker again:

The Times has viciously attacked President Trump on a daily basis since the primary campaign in 2016, both in its editorials and in its news coverage. The paper has committed itself to the “Resistance” and is openly trying to destroy the administration. Nothing Trump says about the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN and other Democratic Party outlets is too harsh. They have completely abandoned traditional standards of objective journalism.

UPDATE on media bias:

Professor: I ‘DEMAND That White Editors Resign’

Professor: I ‘DEMAND That White Editors Resign’, by Katherine Timpf.

A controversial English professor at California State University–Fresno is demanding that all white editors resign from their positions immediately.

In a Tuesday tweet on her private Twitter account, which was obtained by Campus Reform, Randa Jarrar stated:

At some point, all of us in the literary community must DEMAND that white editors resign. It’s time to STEP DOWN and hand over the positions of power. We don’t have to wait for them to [f***] up. The fact that they hold these positions is [f***] up enough.

This is noteworthy because this is at the leading edge of cultural change. There was no Twitter eruption closing her down and shutting her up.

Anti-white racism is becoming increasingly fashionable on the left. Calls for “diversity” are often little more than disguised anti-white racism, but now it is becoming overt. Like antisemitism, the left’s way of dealing with groups who out-compete is to intimidate and discriminate against them. Are whites becoming the new Jews? (See here and here.)
