Trump’s Border Separation Policy: What Kind of Country Are We?

Trump’s Border Separation Policy: What Kind of Country Are We? By Karl Vick. This is in Time magazine, which currently has the cover:

Subtle, eh? The headline suggests Trump is responsible, and the picture shows what meanies he and the US have become.

For the first 240 years of U.S. history, at least, our most revered chief executives reliably articulated a set of high-minded, humanist values that bound together a diverse nation by naming what we aspired to: democracy, humanity, equality. The Enlightenment ideals Thomas Jefferson etched onto the Declaration of Independence were given voice by Presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama.

Donald Trump doesn’t talk like that. …

Instead, with each passing month he is testing anew just how far from our founding humanism his “America first” policies can take us. And over the past two months on our southern border, we have seen the result. …

On April 6, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a new “zero tolerance” policy toward those crossing illegally into the U.S. from Mexico. In mere weeks, over 2,000 children were taken from their parents and held, alone, sometimes behind chain-link fences, under the cold care of the federal government. …

Then follows a long diatribe that casts the worst possible light on all of Trump’s policies and actions. No mention that Trump is enforcing the law that existed before his presidency, that Obama detained children similarly, that criminals in the US are likewise separated from their children (no, their children don’t go to jail), or that the solution being advocated by the left is to let in all illegal immigrants who are parents — having a child would guarantee you entry to the US. Just think of all those new voters and cheap labor!

The big loser from this episode will be the mainstream media, for once again misleading the public — by not mentioning the relevant bits so as to give the wrong impression. The truth will get out to most people eventually. What ever happened to “the whole truth and nothing but the truth”?

It all makes sense when we realize that the media judges whether to include or omit each bit of information by asking “how does this help the left?”. Nearly all “journalists” today are more accurately thought of as leftists with bylines.
