Conservative think tank head resigns, saying social media threatens the “world of ideas”, by Blake Paterson.

American Enterprise Institute head Arthur Brooks said Wednesday he plans to step down in the summer of 2019 after more than ten years leading the conservative think tank. …

Reflecting on his decade as president, Brooks cautioned against what he saw as an increasing deterioration of respectful public debate in the mass media, politics, and on college campuses. He also warned of the threat of “mediocrity through trivialization,” arguing that social media threatens “the world of ideas.”

“When half-baked 280-character opinions and tiny hits of click-fueled dopamine displace one’s hard-earned training and vocation, it’s a lousy trade,” Brooks wrote.
