Australia: Yes vote graffiti sprayed on church

Australia: Yes vote graffiti sprayed on church, by Rebecca Urban.

Properties, including an architecturally significant church in the NSW Blue Mountains, have been vandalised in attacks linked to simmering tensions over the same-sex marriage postal vote.

Senior members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Leura west of Sydney, woke on Saturday to find the local chapel splattered with “Vote Yes” slogans in red and black paint.

Police are also investigating attacks on four properties in South Brisbane across the weekend.

One woman returned home on Sunday to find swastikas on her fence and home business signage.

Officers are investigating whether the properties were directly targeted as all four displayed prominent rainbow flags, which have come to signify allegiance with the LGBTI community.
