The Australian media should be careful in the same-sex marriage debate or risk the humiliation the US media suffered as a result of the “surprise” election of Donald Trump as US President.

What’s more, like the failure of the US media to do its job, a failure by Australian media to do their job properly could exacerbate social divisions and help either side repudiate the result. And if the media are seen to be as one with the political and corporate elite in lopsided support and treatment of the Yes campaign, their reputation will suffer further.
