In the early ’90s only 73,417 people in Sydney identified as Islamic — about 2.1 per cent of the city’s population. …

But by 2016 the number of Muslims has rapidly grown to 5.3 per cent of people in greater Sydney, equating to more than 253,000 people in the city.

Across NSW in 2016, 267, 659 residents identified as Muslim — a figure which equates to 3.6 per cent of the population.
