‘Politicians are jailed for insulting Islam and gays are flogged’: Pauline Hanson slams Malcolm Turnbull for praising Indonesia as a moderate Islamic nation and ‘a great example to the world’. By Kate Darvall.
Speaking to media on Friday, Mr Turnbull said Indonesia served as ‘proof that Islam democracy and moderation are compatible’.
‘A quarter of a billion Muslims live in Indonesia and it is a nation where democracy and moderation, tolerance, mutual respect operate hand in hand,’ he said.
Mr Turnbull said it was something Australia should aspire to.
Is our elite insane? Ms Hanson is scorned by the elite, but is correct:
Ms Hanson … highlighted Indonesia’s punishment of two men who were sentenced to 85 lashes in May this year after they were found guilty of gay sex. The men, both in their early 20s, were charged with homosexuality in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province. The punishment was imposed under sharia law.
Ms Hanson also mentioned Indonesia’s punishment of a man who was found guilty of sex outside of marriage. The 27-year-old man was caned eight times in front of a crowd in Aceh in February this year.
Ms Hanson also highlighted the imprisonment of an Indonesian governor after he was accused of insulting the holy Quran. Jakarta’s Christian governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama was charged with blasphemy after he referenced a passage of the Quran during a re-election campaign speech in September. Hard-line Islamist groups claimed he insulted the holy book and he was sentenced to two years jail.
