Trendsetter alert: Highgate School, London, allows skirts for male pupils

Trendsetter alert: Highgate School, London, allows skirts for male pupils, by Sian Griffiths.

One of the UK’s leading private schools is planning to bring in mix-and-match “gender neutral” uniforms that would allow boys to wear skirts.

The move by Highgate School in north London comes as head teachers warn that they are struggling to deal with growing numbers of children questioning their identity as boys or girls.

Equality groups set up by pupils are pushing for gender-neutral lavatories, for teachers to use gender-neutral pronouns such as “they”, for all sports to be open to all pupils and for a ban on words and phrases such as “ladylike” and “man up”.

Critics warn that the rush to introduce ill-thought-out gender-neutral policies risked encouraging “copycat” behaviour among children, fuelled by social media and the internet.

Figures show a surge in the number of young people – mainly girls – seeking help to change gender. More than 2000 under-18s were referred to the Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust in north London last year, against around 100 when it opened eight years ago. …

Schools were having to mediate between parents and children, because some parents did not know their children were querying their gender identity with counsellors at school. …

Next month, Highgate will hold a conference titled The Developing Teenager for dozens of schools. One topic for discussion is how teachers should handle the growing pressure from children to scrap “old fashioned” ideas of male and female. Instead, many youngsters prefer to think of gender as a spectrum along which they can explore gender identities that include being “gender neutral”, “trans” or “cis”.

The sexual revolutionaries might be causing some real harm out there.
