US President-elect Donald Trump has blasted General Motors and threatened to impose a “big border tax” for making some Chevrolet Cruze cars in Mexico, which the US carmaker defended as part of a strategy to serve global customers, not sell them in the US.

“General Motors is sending Mexican made model of Chevy Cruze to US car dealers – tax free across border. Make in USA or pay big border tax!” Trump said in a post on Twitter.

Just hours after Mr Trump’s outburst, Ford announced that it would cancel plans to build a $1.6 billion factory in Mexico, and would use some of that money to build new vehicles in the US.
