Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has blamed Malcolm Fraser’s 1970s immigration policy for some of the problems Australia is now experiencing with Middle Eastern crime gangs and Islamic radicalisation. …
Mr Dutton said many foreign fighters were the children or grandchildren of migrants the former prime minister let in.
“The reality is Malcolm Fraser did make mistakes in bringing some people in the 1970s and we’re seeing that today,” the told Sky News last night. “We need to be honest in having that discussion. There was a mistake made.” …
Opposition Leader Bill Shorten … dismissed Immigration Minister Peter Dutton’s comments.
Melbourne’s problems with Sudanese gangs:
Liberal MP and inquiry chair Jason Wood said his seat of La Trobe in Melbourne’s multicultural outer southeastern suburbs was at the epicentre of an ethnic crime wave.
“There’s been a lot of gang-related activity and when we look at say the Apex gang, it’s obviously centred around a group of people who are from Sudan who’ve decided they’re going to commit violent crimes against Melburnians, car-jackings, home invasions, and it just hasn’t stopped,” the former counter-terror policeman told ABC radio. …
Asked whether he was concerned about the risk of racial profiling or further marginalising vulnerable people, Mr Wood said it was important to “call a spade a spade”.
