Australia: Gillian Triggs will not have HRC contract renewed, says Turnbull

Australia: Gillian Triggs will not have HRC contract renewed, says Turnbull, by The Australian.

Liberal Senator for Tasmania Eric Abetz said today he welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement.

“Be it the Commission’s inquiry into children in detention, the QUT students’ case under section 18C which denied natural justice and was thrown out of court or the solicited complaints against Bill Leak which have now been dropped, the Human Rights Commission has suffered major reputational blows under [her] leadership.”

“These failings have only been compounded by Professor Triggs being caught out telling mistruths to a Senate Committee and to journalists.”

“Many Australians have felt let down by the Human Rights Commission who instead of protecting freedom of speech has sought to limit it by masquerading as a self-appointed PC-police unit.”

“I am hopeful that the next Human Rights Commission President understands natural justice, has a proven track-record in telling the truth and is keen to promote freedom of speech”.

The campaign and petition to remove her proved successful.
