In an appeal to anxious voters, Donald Trump is pledging Thursday night that “safety will be restored” if he is elected president, using his Republican convention address to denounce Democrat Hillary Clinton as part of a political class causing the nation’s troubles.

“As long as we are led by politicians who will not put ‘America First,’ then we can be assured that other nations will not treat America with respect,” Trump says, according to excerpts released ahead of his address. …

Trump is promising “profound relief” and “simplified” taxes for the middle class,” an end to excessive regulation, and infrastructure projects that will create millions of jobs, according to the excerpts.

Mr. Trump… prepared a speech to the Republican convention here portraying himself chiefly as a truth-teller who would identify and retaliate against threats to the United States. …

“Americans watching this address tonight have seen the recent images of violence in our streets and the chaos in our communities,” according to the excerpts, referring to recent mass shootings and killings of police officers. “Many have witnessed this violence personally, some have even been its victims. I have a message for all of you: The crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end.”

“Beginning on January 20th, 2017, safety will be restored,” Mr. Trump was to say, referring to inauguration day for the next president.

The difference between the US presidential candidates this year is larger than most elections, with a choice between “more of the  same” and “quite different.”
