A peaceful protest has taken a turn after snipers shot 11 police officers, killing three, according to Dallas Police Chief Brown:
“Tonight it appears that two snipers shot ten police officers from elevated positions during the protest/rally. Three officers are deceased, two are in surgery and three are in critical condition. An intensive search for suspects is currently underway. No suspects are in custody at this time.“

At 10 p.m. NBC 5’s Cory Smith reported that Dallas police believe they have a gunman confined to a building and are currently negotiating with that person.
Police continue to exchange gunfire with a cornered gunman hours after five officers were fatally shot at the conclusion of a peaceful protest in downtown Dallas, officials said early Friday morning.
Three other suspects were in custody in connection with the shooting, according to Dallas Police Chief David Brown. …
The cornered suspect is not cooperating and has told negotiators “he’s going to hurt and kill more of us,” alluding to bombs planted in the area, Brown said. …
Eleven officers in all were shot by gunmen in what police believe to be a coordinated ambush attack that began at 8:58 p.m., at the close of a rally in solidarity with two men killed in officer-involved shootings, one in Louisiana, one in Minnesota.

A gruesome video shows a heroic policeman taking on one of gunmen, but being gunned down by the shooter before being shot again execution-style, from point-blank range.

The final ambush suspect from the downtown Dallas rally is dead from a self-inflicted gun wound, according to police.
This has overtones of a race war, and of 1968. Let’s hope that is averted.
