Student union backflips to allow believers’ right of association based on faith

The University of Sydney Student Union previously threatened to deregister the university’s evangelical union unless it dropped the requirement that members be evangelical Christians — that they attest to their belief that “Jesus is Lord.” The Union said the requirement breached its prohibition against discrimination on religious grounds, and worked against promoting inclusivity.

Today the University of Sydney Student Union reversed that decision, and will now allow “faith based declarations as a condition of membership”.

Good to see the University of Sydney, which William Charles Wentworth helped establish in 1849, still allows freedom of association.
