Sadiq Khan leading in London election polls, expected to be city’s first Muslim mayor

Sadiq Khan leading in London election polls, expected to be city’s first Muslim mayor, by Lisa Millar.

Londoners are poised to elect their first Muslim mayor.

If the polls are correct, on May 5, Sadiq Khan will not only take the keys to City Hall, but he will be the first Muslim leader of any major western city. He is double-digit points ahead of his nearest rival, conservative Zac Goldsmith. …

One in eight Londoners are Muslim and white Britons in London make up less than half of the population. …

Mr Khan has campaigned hard on his background as the son of a Pakistani-born bus driver who grew up on a council estate. “I want to use the experiences that I’ve got as a Londoner, as somebody of Islamic faith as someone who’s come into contact with people of odious views to make sure we keep London safe.” … Prime Minister David Cameron said Mr Khan had shared platforms with extremists “again and again and again”.

Mr Goldsmith is a 41-year-old son of a billionaire who was educated at the same school as Prince William and David Cameron.

The Conservative Party have selected as their mayoral candidate a silver spoon oaf who has no inkling of middle class reality. As with the US establishment, they have become so divorced from normal people that they are bringing about their own downfall. It is not isolated to the UK or US either; it has happened all over the world – including Austria and Australia. The established parties are toast; it is the politics that will replace them that should be the discussion point.
