Press Freedom Dying in South Africa. A prominent journalist has resigned after his newspaper apologized on demand to the President, who objected to a critical article. Max du Preez pointed out that the apology was wrong in fact, and that the newspaper did not even contact him before issuing the apology, which he call “a travesty.” And the president? He used the old “it’s racist” excuse to close down discussion of his corruption: “The piece smacks of prejudice and racism…”
