Some say gender and sexual fluidity is just a fad or a phase, but more and more young people are refusing to be categorised as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual… or anything at all.

Over the next few weeks, the ABC will look at whether this generation is quietly threatening a revolution or just finally being honest.

Yes, complex behavioral traits show variation. But aside from rare chromosomal abnormalities, sex determination is binary in humans and there are at most two slightly-overlapping bell-curves of behavior.

Forty years ago the PC crew were earnestly proclaiming that boys and girls were the same except for the way they were brought up — so boys brought up as girls would prefer dolls and not guns, and so on. A few people even derived political or financial advantage from spreading this belief. But facts are stubborn things, ignoring the heartfelt wishes of even the most compassionate and virtuous among us, and a generation of disappointed PC parents has now quietly consigned this rubbish to the trash can.
